Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created, with ALIEN: COVENANT, a new chapter in his groundbreaking ALIEN franchise. The crew of the colony ship Covenant, bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world. When they uncover a threat beyond their imagination, they must attempt a harrowing escape.

Please stop Ridley Scott...

What hasn’t been made quite clear before this point is how many prequels Ridley Scott plans to make to his original 1979 “Alien”.

We had “Prometheus,” and this year we get “Alien: Covenant”. Both are set before the events of the Nostromo, and Scott has previously indicated he had a prequel trilogy in mind – but it wasn’t quite clear if that trilogy began with ‘Covenant’ or “Prometheus”.

Well now it seems those plans are moving along nicely as 79-year-old filmmaker Ridley Scott tells The Sydney Morning Herald that the next film is already written, there’s already plans for a 2018 film shoot, and he’s got plenty of energy in him for more films:

“You’ve got to assume to a certain extent success and from that you’d better be ready. You don’t want a two-year gap. So I’ll be ready to go again next year…. If you really want a franchise, I can keep cranking it for another six. I’m not going to close it down again. No way.”

The article also confirms that “Prometheus” isn’t part of this trilogy, rather ‘Covenant’ is the first of the films which take the saga to “the back entrance” of the original “Alien”. Scott speaks about the differences between the two films:

“What we did really well on Prometheus, considering that it was a ground zero idea that was starting all over again, was I discovered that people do have an appetite for the alien and what he means and his evolution – the egg, the facehugger, the chestburster as we call them. People still want to see it. So I return to a little bit of that but not wholeheartedly; there’s a lot in here which is new as well… We go from Prometheus into both worlds of the original Alien and a little bit of Prometheus. Prometheus was about who and why? This is getting closer to who designed it and for what reason.”

Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup, Danny McBride, Demian Bichir, Carmen Ejogo, Amy Seimetz, Jussie Smollett, Callie Hernandez, Nathaniel Dean, Alexander England, Benjamin Rigby, and James Franco co-star in the new film which opens May 19th.

Still worried about this one. Looks like it is going to be CGI heavy and as much as I love Danny McBride, I really don't want to see Kenny Powers in space.

Filmmaker Ridley Scott is at it again. After seemingly promising six overall films set in the universe before events in “Alien,” he seemed to recant that idea suggesting that a direct sequel to “Prometheus” and this year’s “Alien: Covenant” would be the final of the prequels.

Now he’s extending out the line again with a suggestion of multiple follow-ups to ‘Covenant’. Instagram user Luis Nostromo has posted a segment on Instagram of a Q&A conducted with Scott and actor Michael Fassbender in which Scott was asked about the possibility of Ellen Ripley being worked back into the “Alien” franchise. Scott responded:

“We’re heading toward the back end of the first Alien so [using CG] may be feasible. I don’t think it’ll… but Ripley’s going to be somebody’s daughter. Obviously. We’re coming in from the back end. The time constraints, of what’s the time between this film, where we leave David going off heading for that colony, I think you’re probably two films out from even considering her.”

Scott seems quite confident there will be more “Alien” films, even as “Alien: Covenant” looks like it will finish its international run under or close to $300 million – over $100 million less than “Prometheus” and overall break even. Whether Scott will get the chance seems fairly uncertain at this point.
