Soaring to the top of the box-office this weekend and scoring excellent reviews, John Krasinski's horror film A QUIET PLACE has been enough of a success that talk of a sequel has already begun. Funnily enough, it seems the film's scribes Bryan Woods and Scott Beck already have a handful of ideas for a follow-up. Speaking with Fandango, Beck says he and Woods have plenty of stories and set pieces they didn't use that could be tweaked for a sequel:

"There are so many discarded set pieces, too, just hiding out on Word documents on our computer. So, yeah, there are certainly so many stories you could tell. It's just really, at the end of the day, who are the characters in this and what does this situation mean to that dynamic?"

Kosinski himself also re-wrote the pair's script, making some adjustments such as the sand paths, but the most notable change was he ditched flashbacks that were in the original script. Producer Andrew Form tells Heat Vision:

"Initially, there were flashbacks where the characters talked. Also, the sibling's death was handled in a flashback. John was adamant that we get rid of it, making it present day and kept the urgency of the storytelling."

A QUIET PLACE sequel: According to The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount Pictures is planning to make A QUIET PLACE sequel after the first movie opened three weeks ago to outstanding box office returns, giving the beleaguered studio a much needed shot in the arm. Since opening in theaters on April 6, it has grossed over $213 million worldwide on a $17 million dollar budget.

"We're already working with these guys on a sequel," studio chairman-CEO Jim Gianopulos said."If you told me five years ago that an almost silent film starring the very funny guy Jim from 'The Office' would have been a hit at Paramount, I would have said, 'Well, I should go work at Paramount.'"

In the wake of the major success of the horror film A QUIET PLACE, the nearly immediate announcement of a sequel by Paramount Pictures came as little surprise. Even so, the film's star and writer/director John Krasinski has revealed to Deadline web site he didn't expect such a response to his first horror film, one that he made as a stand-alone piece:

"It's only a short while since the movie came out, but already people are saying, 'We want to live in this world more,' which is really interesting. I'm surprised people aren't like, 'Nah, we know what this is, and we just want to leave it as it is.' To be perfectly honest, it was never really on my mind while we were making it. I never really thought of it as an expanded world; I always thought of it as a one-off.

Krasinski has not yet confirmed he will helm the next installment, but does discuss what he'd like to see in a sequel: "The thing that I loved in the movie, where my mind kept wandering as we were making it, was the question of who was on the other end of those fires, when the father lights the fire and in the distance those other fires light up. How did those people survive? How did that old man survive?

In the extreme these characters are going through, there's no room to think about that. They're there, there's an old man who's about to scream, they just have to deal with that. I think it would be interesting to see what's going on elsewhere at this same time."

In a post-apocalyptic world, a family is forced to live in silence while hiding from monsters with ultra-sensitive hearing.

A stylish and ultra effective horror tale that could have easily felt flat due to its "gimmick" but thankfully doesn't.

Director: John Krasinski
Running time: 90 minutes
Released: 2018

It saved Paramount's bacon this year, and thankfully the studio knows not to rush things when it comes to maximising the success of John Krasinski's film. The film, which Krasinski both directed and co-starred in with his wife Emily Blunt, followed a family living a near silent life in a world where sound-sensitive creatures attack anything that makes loud noises, has grossed over $328 million worldwide along with some of the year's best reviews.

Almost immediately after release, talk of a follow-up began but Krasinski is busy with other directorial projects in the works and filming commitments on Amazon's JACK RYAN series which is about to begin production of its second season (the first debuts in August). Thankfully producer Andrew Form, speaking with Collider, says Paramount has every intention of not proceeding until Krasinski is ready:

"Oh [Krasinski is] definitely involved. We're lucky on this one. I've had movies where the studio says to you, 'Here's your date. Let's go!' and on this one we're not rushing anything, which is amazing. So we're gonna take our time, we're gonna figure out where to go, but there is no rush on it and we're just starting to talk about it. We're figuring out what everyone's involvement's gonna be and what the actual next movie's gonna be.

The first one is so special to us that we really want to take our time with this and not rush anything. It's such a special movie to us, the experience and everything. It's easy to rush these and we've made movies in the past where we've rushed them through and we've felt it, and we just don't wanna do it on this one. We really don't. We really just wanna take our time and as long as it takes, it takes. It has to be the right story, just like the first one. It just has to be."
