THE SPIRIT (1986) - Sam Jones (of FLASH GORDON fame) stars as the mysterious crime fighter in this made-for-TV movie based on the Will Eisner comic books.

When his best friend dies under mysterious circumstances, detective Denny Colt investigates a suspicious museum curator and ends up shot for his troubles. Believed dead, though his body was never found, Colt determines to use the situation to his advantage and continue his investigation with a mask protecting his identity.

The movie looks cheap and the main character is bland, but this is still pretty enjoyable. What's most interesting is that the film blends the aesthetics of the 1940s and the modern day 3 years before Tim Burton's BATMAN did it to great effect and kicked off a bit of a trend of it for a while (seen in films like DICK TRACY and THE ROCKETEER).

4 stars out of 5.

Evil Doctor - A by the numbers Lifetime thriller with Dina Meyer playing the title villain. She's gorgeous as usual and even has a lesbian scene in a bathtub before she kills the woman.

BAD RONALD (1974) - Made for TV horror/psychological thriller. A teenage boy (the titular Ronald) accidentally kills a neighbor and his single mother decides to keep him hidden in an unknown room in the house, telling the cops he ran away from home. Ronald's mother dies before they could leave town together (after the heat dies down), and Ronald lives in the house unbeknownst to the new family that moves in. A creepy enough scenario even before Ronald develops a crush on one of the girls...

Low budget as hell, but reasonably well acted and has some good creepy moments. 3 stars out of 5.

Truth or Dare...this couldve been the next big franchise or at least spawn a few sequels. The deaths werent gruesome enough..the premise lacked a compelling monster..mythology..and not enough scares. The acting was good and an ambitious ending but...still forgettable

Atomic Blonde

Set in the late 1980s, an undercover MI6 agent is sent to Berlin during the Cold War to investigate the murder of a fellow agent and recover a missing list of double agents.

Apart from the great songs selection, this one is a total mess. It tries to be stylish but fails miserably. The action sequences are so poorly choreographed its almost laughable. And the less said about the endless plot twists, the better. Overrated!

Director: David Leitch
Running time: 115 minutes
Released: 2017

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World

Scott Pilgrim must defeat his new girlfriend's seven evil exes in order to win her heart.

An highly entertaining and fun adaptation of the Bryan Lee O'Malley's Oni Press comic book. It gets one more point for casting the gorgeous Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

Director: Edgar Wright
Running time: 112 minutes
Released: 2010

TERMINAL INVASION (2002) - A blizzard strands a group of travellers at a small airport where humanoid aliens threaten to kill them one-by-one. Echoes of John Carpenter's THE THING, but with a made-for-TV budget. Stars Bruce Campbell, directed by Sean Cunningham. 3 stars out of 5.

Avengers Infinity War

The Avengers and their allies must be willing to sacrifice all in an attempt to defeat the powerful Thanos before his blitz of devastation and ruin puts an end to the universe.

An unprecedented cinematic journey ten years in the making and spanning the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. Personally, I wouldn't change a thing from the film. It delivers the goods on every levels. It follows the comics but adapt it to the MCU, bringing in some great surprises.

Directors: Anthony Russo, Joe Russo
Running time: 149 minutes
Released: 2018

PIECES (1982) - Juan Piquer Simon's cult classic slasher movie, in which a mysterious man slaughters college girls with a chainsaw and keeps certain parts from each girl to assemble them like a jigsaw puzzle.

Some ridiculous characterization and some hammy acting, but with a moody score and some well done visuals. I like it! 4 stars out of 5.

Such a classic! I saw this one when I was 10 years ago... that ending messed me up!

Laugh

Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan - Jason is accidentally revived again and stows away on board a cruise ship with graduating high school students headed for New York, he kills most of them on the ship and the survivors make it to the city and he chases them around there. This last installment in the Paramount series, before they helped New Line produce the 2009 remake, isn't as bad as some claim it to be, but Jason's death is the dumbest one they could come up with. And his teleportation ability is silly.

Not a big fan of this one but there are some good moments.

Jason

Psychokinesis

After drinking water from a mountain spring, a bank security guard gains telekinetic superpowers, which he must use to save his estranged daughter from an evil construction company, as a superhero.

What happened? After giving us the amazing Train to Busan, we are treated here to this uninteresting mix of social commentary, comedy and superheroe, which ends up being a total mess. Disappointing to say the least.

Director: Yeon Sang-ho
Running time: 101 minutes
Released: 2018
