Old Boy

After being kidnapped and imprisoned for fifteen years, Oh Dae-Su is released, only to find that he must find his captor in five days.

Its virtuoso story, haunting cinematography, ambient score, amazing performance from the cast and the shocking truth at the end made it an instant classic. "Laugh and everyone will laugh. Cry and you will be all alone".

Director: Park Chan-wook
Running time: 120 minutes
Released: 2003

Sympathy for Lady Vengeance

After being wrongfully imprisoned for thirteen years and having her child taken away from her, a woman seeks revenge through increasingly cruel and brutal means.

Told partly in flashbacks, this masterpiece is visually breath taking and masterfully crafted as the haunting story of Geum-Ja unfolds before our eyes in shock, sadness and tragedy. This is not your average movie that goes from point A to B. This is story telling at its best and most gripping.

Director: Park Chan-wook
Running time: 115 minutes
Released: 2005

Inside

A woman in her third trimester of pregnancy is stalked by a stranger who is obsessed with her unborn child.

The inevitable American remake of the French masterpiece. Not as extreme, devoid of suspense, this useless experience never justifies its existence.

Director: Miguel Angel Vivas
Running time: 89 minutes
Released: 2016

Phantasm IV Oblivion

In hopes of finally getting his chance to rule the world, the wicked Tall Man goes in search of a successor.

Using tons of unused footage from the first film, this fourth chapter was to lead us into Roger Avary's Phantasm 1999 AD film, which never happened. In the end, what we've got is an incoherent surrealistic mess.

Director: Don Coscarelli
Running time: 90 minutes
Released: 1998

Phantasm Ravager

The cult favorite series comes to a close as Mike and Reggie join forces across time and space to finish off the Tall Man once and for all.

The final installment of the long-running Phantasm series, written by its creator Don Coscarelli. Lots of love went into this zero budget production but from a technical or logical aspect its a total mess.

Director: David Hartman
Running time: 85 minutes
Released: 2016

Downrange

Stranded at the side of the road after a tire blowout, a group of friends become targets for an enigmatic sniper.

A good concept plagued by poor execution (pun intended) and annoying characters.

Director: Ryuhei Kitamura
Running time: 90 minutes
Released: 2017

DRAGON: THE BRUCE LEE STORY (1993) - Jason Scott Lee (no relation) stars in this biopic about the life of legendary martial artist and film star.

Throughout the 60s and into the early 70s, Bruce meets and loves a woman named Linda (whose book this film was largely based on) and fights against racial prejudice (from white people who stereotype Asians negatively and from Asians who don't want Bruce to teach martial arts to non-Asian students). A recurring theme of the film is Bruce's "inner demon" appearing when he least expects it, threatening to destroy the martial artist if he succumbs to his fears and doubts.

A film blending romance and action, real life and fantasy, with great performances by Jason and Lauren Holly as Linda. Some excellent fight scenes and a touching musical score that loses a bit of its impact because it was reused frequently in trailers for other "feel-good" drama films. But I really enjoy DRAGON anyway. 4.5 stars out of 5.

Mayhem

Derek Cho is having a really bad day. After being unjustly fired from his job, he discovers that the law firm's building is under quarantine for a mysterious and dangerous virus. Chaos erupts throughout the office as the victims of the disease begin acting out their wildest impulses. Joining forces with a former client who has a grudge of her own, Derek savagely fights tooth and nail to get to the executives on the top floor and settle the score once and for all.

Stylish ultra violence chaos packed together in one of the best surprise in years. An extra point for the casting of Samara Weaving.

Director: Joe Lynch
Running time: 86 minutes
Released: 2017

The Belko Experiment

In a twisted social experiment, eighty Americans are locked in their high-rise corporate office in Bogota, Colombia, and ordered by an unknown voice coming from the company's intercom system to participate in a deadly game of kill or be killed.

A predictable but entertaining look at life in an office.

Director: Greg McLean
Running time: 82 minutes
Released: 2017

Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance

A recently laid off factory worker kidnaps his former boss' friend's daughter, hoping to use the ransom money to pay for his sister's kidney transplant.

A dark, haunting, touching film with unexpected plot twists and some graphic violent moments. Highly recommended.

Director: Park Chan-wook
Running time: 129 minutes
Released: 2002

At this crossroads in his life, he feels that he has no better option than to work for an old buddy as a drug courier. This improves his situation until the terrible day that he finds himself in a gunfight between a group of police officers and his own ruthless allies. When the smoke clears, Bradley is badly hurt and thrown in prison, where his enemies force him to commit acts of violence that turn the place into a savage battleground.

From the director of Bone Tomahawk. Vince Vaughn gives an amazing performance in this brutally violent flick.

Director: S. Craig Zahler

Ichi the Killer

A bloodthirsty hoodlum (Tadanobu Asano) sparks a series of violent reprisals after his boss is apparently taken by a mysterious assassin.

Based on the Koroshiya 1 manga, this is probably Miike's greatest achievement. It is one incredibly stylish and violent film, using various format and speed frame. Once again, the director deals with the familly subject, which you can always find in his films.

Director: Takashi Miike
Running time: 129 minutes
Released: 2001
