Captain America bids farewell
Iconic comic hero gunned down by sniper
By ERIN MAXWELL

Captain America
Captain America
Captain America, one of Marvel Comics oldest and most iconic characters, was killed in the latest issue of his self-titled comic book. He was 66 years old.

The legendary crime fighter was shot by a sniper's bullet while exiting the Federal Courthouse.

Captain America came on the scene in 1941 as a patriotic crime fighter who battled Nazis in World War II. Also known as Steve Rogers, the superhero served his country by signing up for a "super soldier serum," which enabled him to become the ultimate fighting machine for the U.S.

After the war, Captain America went on to battle Cold War Communists before entering suspended animation so that he may serve his country in the future. He returned to action decades later where he helped set up the Avengers and continued the good fight in his own line of comics.

In the last seven decades, Jack Kirby and Joe Simon's creation has sold 210 million comic books and has been printed in over 70 different countries.

Rogers was never married and has no known living relatives.

considering the punisher has been kicking ass and taking names lately, its a welcome addition.

In the last few episodes of war journal, he not only killed stilt man, but poisoned and blew up a bar full of drunk super villains, now if that's not bad ass, I don't know what is.

Yeah, wtf gives with capt America? Wasn't he supposed to be a super solider or some shit aka bullets can't hurt him? tisk tisk marvel. Lets see where this goes. Since marvel is planning another Capt. America movie, you never know what can happen.

This is marvels sad attempt at drawing attention to a comic character that isnt that interesting or popular anymore. So killing him off a compel comic book geeks to rush and buy his final outting before they surprise!! resurect him. I perfer the Punisher over everyone except Batman

When you think about it, captain America was symbolic America during WW2, very gung ho and good natured.

The whole punisher taking over the captain America thing makes sense in a way. The WW2 cap is out of touch with today (it is said in civil war frontline 11), where as the punisher is in tune with current American values.

Frank Castle doesn't care who the enemy is, he simply kills them or tortures them to get what he wants, he doesn't do things by the book, he plays by his rules and his alone with no disregard for others. in a lot of ways American values have transitioned from those of the stars and srtipes of the old capt. to the kill those bastards punisher. I for one find this storyline interesting as hell

(I am not trying to start a debate on values or politics, just pointing out comic book character development)

I think you make some good points, here. truth be told ever since I was a kid, I always liked Punisher's way of dealing w/ criminals. though, Capt killed a terrorist a few yrs ago, it is ONE person out of a million he has fought.

W/ the exceptions of major villains like the Kingpin, Jigsaw, etc Punisher has killed all who have stood in his way.
