Marvel Studios has set Matthew Vaughn ("Stardust," "Layer Cake") to direct a live-action adaptation of the Marvel Comics character "Thor" reports Variety.

Mark Protosevich ("I Am Legend") penned the adaptation of the blonde-tressed, hammer-wielding hero who's sent to Earth to protect mankind.

Vaughn was previously attached to direct "X-Men 3" before bowing out for personal reasons. Production is slated start this winter, implying a 2009 release.

Marvel Studios wants wrestler Triple H ("Blade: Trinity") to play the god of thunder Thor in the film adaptation of the famed comic.

This has caused a big riff with director Matthew Vaughn ("Stardust") who "is dead set against it." However with the disappointing opening of "Stardust" and the looming strike, he may not have much choice.

Other talk has yielded a far more interesting possibility - Kevin McKidd (HBO's "Rome," "Kingdom of Heaven," "Hannibal Rising"). Of course that will also depend upon the failure/success of NBC's "Journeyman" which he's the lead star in.

Tyler mane is pretty underated as an acting big man. He's come a long way from Xmen and has shown some talent in acting. He would make a good bad ass thor. They just need to keep the cheese out of this movie and go with the pissed of bearded looking thor they had a few years ago.

Out doing promotion for NBC's upcoming time-travel series "Journeyman", actor Kevin McKidd confirmed to Sci-Fi Wire that he may play the title character in a big-screen version of the Marvel comic book Thor.

McKidd ("The Last Legion," "Young Hannibal," HBO's "Rome") called the reports "semi-true...I didn't know about it either until I heard the rumors and I called my agent. And he went, 'Yeah, yeah, yeah, we've been talking to them about it.' But the last I heard from my agent, they're talking that they want to go for somebody much younger, a 19- or 20-year-old, for that role. So they're reconceptualizing it as we speak."

That doesn't stop him from appearing anyhow - "I think there's the other main male character in that movie that I'm in consideration for. But, certainly by no means it's not in the bag or anything and, to be honest, until I read a script I don't really know. I haven't really had a look at a script. This is all still just information that's coming in. So, you know, it could be fun, but it just depends on what's on the page. I think it all starts and finishes with the quality of the script."

Matthew Vaughn ("Stardust") is set to direct "Thor" for Marvel Studiosť

Since Matthew Vaughn left the project a while back, many have wondered who would take over Marvel Studios adaptation of their "Thor" comic. Now, director D.J. Caruso ("Disturbia," "Eagle Eye") tells IESB.Net that he would be up for the gig.

"I would definitely tackle it and I sort of wrestled with it before and I was always a fan of Thor growing up as a kid. I know that they [Marvel] have a script, but there's something, there's a fear I have about Thor and depending on what Thor story you want to tell, whether you want to bring Thor into the modern world or if you want to go back to Asgard and get the history of what's happening between him and his brother and dad. That's one I've always been interested in and it also would be, it would be a monumental task so, I could definitely see myself getting myself into that" says Caruso.

Has there been any offers on Marvel's part for the gig? "I have had some talks with Marvel about it but I have not seen a screenplay. It could be something that I am interested in."

Branagh in talks to direct 'Thor'

Kenneth Branagh is negotiating to direct "Thor," the next Marvel Comics property that will be turned into a live-action film by Marvel Studios. Pic will be released in 2010.

Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige's choice of Branagh is surprising, as Branagh hasn't really directed an action-heavy film since his debut on "Henry V," a bloody telling of the British king's conquest of France.

Branagh is the latest in a string of directors -- such as Jon Favreau ("Iron Man"), Christopher Nolan (the Batman franchise) and Gavin Hood ("X-Men Origins: Wolverine") -- with arthouse roots taking on big-budget comicbook fare.

Marvel will set a distributor for "Thor" shortly.

"Thor" comicbook adaptation, penned by Mark Protosevich, follows disabled medical student Donald Blake, who has an alter ego as the hammer-wielding Norse god Thor.

Marvel will self-finance the film via its $500 million credit facility through Merrill Lynch. Marvel used that coin to fund both "Iron Man" and "The Incredible Hulk" and will do the same for the "Iron Man" sequel that has director Favreau and star Robert Downey Jr. returning.

The "Thor" negotiations come during a resurgence for Branagh. He's currently drawing raves on the London stage in the title role of "Ivanov," and he'll next be seen acting in the Richard Curtis-directed "The Boat That Rocked" and the Bryan Singer-helmed "Valkyrie."
