The Masters have left this universe it seems as the proposed live-action, John Woo-produced film version of 80's cartoon classic "He-Man" has apparently been cancelled.

Executive Producer Rodney Ferrell ("Flicka") told Moviehole that "This was a project set up at Fox, but in the recent months we gave the project back to Mattel and are no longer involved".

This marks the latest blow in the film's long development process. Multiple delays and writers have come and gone, and whilst Mattel may still pursue it, this is a major setback.

At last report the hottest candidate for the latest incarnation of the sword-wielding blond Adonis? Uber-hunk Paul Walker.

Brad Pitt has laughed off claims in the British press earlier this week that he is to star as cartoon hero "He-Man" in a live-action movie adaptation. Pitt's publicist Cindy Guagenti told The Celebrity Truth the claim is "completely not true."

He-Man is coming back. It's now confirmed that producer Joel Silver and Warner Bros. Pictures are moving forward with a planned "Masters of the Universe" live-action film adaptation of the famous Mattel toyline and 1980's animated series.

The producer and studio are in negotiations with Mattel to acquire the rights to the property. Newcomer Justin Marks, who recently scored a co-writing gig with David Goyer on the Green Arrow prison film "SuperMax," has been brought on board to pen the adaptation.

To quickly summarise the character back history - the very well muscled warrior He-Man - with his blond bob, tiny chrome singlet, fur speedo and calf-high boots - took on the mighty hordes of Skeletor - an equally buff, blue & purple spandex-clad nut job prone to delusions of grandeur resembling those of crystal meth-addicted twinks.

The new version reimagines the property as Prince Adam (He-Man) being a solider who stumbles upon the magical world Eternia where the evil Skeletor is using a technology-fueled army to wipe out all traces of magic.

The property was previously turned into a 1987 feature starring Dolph Lundgren, Frank Langella and Robert Duncan McNeill.

The new live-action film version of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe entitled "Grayskull" has been canceled at Warner Bros. Pictures reports Latino Review.

The studio apparently gave executives at Silver Pictures a short list of A-list directors they would consider making the film (eg. Doug Liman, Bryan Singer) and most passed.

The few remaining up and coming directors who were keen however weren't comfortable enough for Warners to go with.

Another reason is that two executives who were championing the project at Silver Pictures left the company last month.

Justin Marks penned the script for the property which was well-reviewed online.

HE-MAN: "Kung Fu Panda" co-director John Stevenson is rumored to be attached to direct the new live-action "He-Man" for Silver Pictures reports Latino Review.

According to their sources, the former Muppet Show character designer and animation artist pitched a new take on the Mattel and cartoon character which got him the job.

Stevenson has an extensive background in art direction and animation, starting out as a character designer on The Muppet Show in the late 1970’s.

Reuters has confirmed the three month old report from Latino Review that John Stevenson ("Kung Fu Panda") has signed on to direct a new live-action version of "Masters of the Universe" for Warner Bros. and Silver Pictures.

Based on the popular 1980s He-Man cartoon and toy line, Mattel will co-produce the Justin Marks-penned feature which reimagines the story with a more gritty fantasy bent.

In the new version, Adam is a soldier who sets off to find his destiny, happening upon magical world called Eternia. There, a being called Skeletor has raised a technological army and is bent on eradicating all traces of magic.

Production would kick off late 2009/early 2010. No word on a potential release date as yet.
