DEATH NOTE: Warner Bros. is set to adapt the Japanese 13-volume manga series DEATH NOTE into a live-action film reports Variety. The story centers on a college student who accidentally finds a misplaced "death note," infusing him with the power to kill merely by writing anyone's name on the page while picturing the person in his mind. The film will be based on the first three installments in the series penned by Tsugumi Ohba and not the three Japanese-language DEATH NOTE films already produced. Charley and Vlas Parlapanides will adapt the script.

Warner Bros. has made some movement on the long-gestating remake. American redo rights were acquired in mid-2009 and despite many of the casting rumors, none of them were true. The studio tapped Charley and Vlas Parlapanides for a script, however, there have been some changes behind the scenes. Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry are now writing and Shane Black (KISS KISS BANG BANG) is set to direct.

DEATH NOTE centers on a college student who accidentally finds a misplaced "death note," infusing him with the power to kill merely by writing anyone's name on the page while picturing the person in his mind. Three live action Japanese films were culled from the popular manga.

It seems like Gus Van Sant (PSYCHO remake) will direct the American version of the Japanese manga. Vertigo Entertainment, Witten Pictures and Lin Pictures are producing. The popular manga series about a notebook who kills anyone whose name is written in it will get a U.S. adaptation directed by Adam Wingard (YOU'RE NEXT). THR reports Wingard will direct DEATH NOTE for Warner Bros.

The film will be produced by Roy Lee, Dan Lin, Jason Hoffs and Masi Oka. Written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata, DEATH NOTE has previously been adapted into an anime and three live-action films, the third of which was helmed by Hideo Nakata (RINGU). DEATH NOTE sees a young man discover the Death Note and enact a plan to eradicate all evil and criminals in the world with it.

While chatting with the Collider web site, producer Roy Lee offered an update on Adam Wingard's upcoming adaptation of DEATH NOTE. At one point, it was expected to start shooting in spring of this year, but Lee said, "it's a movie we're planning on making this year" and that Wingard is "currently waiting for us to officially greenlight the movie."

The film, adapted from the manga series by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, revolves around a young man who finds a notebook that will kill anyone whose name is written into it. Discovering its power he launches a campaign to rid the world of evil and runs afoul of a police detective. Nat Wolff is set to play the lead, joined by THE LEFTOVER's Margaret Qualley.

On the topic of content, Lee said, "It's definitely for adults. It is zero chance it will be below an R-rating." He also added that they will shoot for a grounded tone with fantastical elements. The manga has already spawned an animated series, video games, a series of live-action films and a television series in Japan.

YOU'RE NEXT and THE GUEST director Adam Wingard has been working away on an English language adaptation of hugely popular Japanese anime and manga DEATH NOTE for quite some time now.

Once set up at Warner Brothers who put it into turnaround a couple months back, Variety are now reporting that Netflix is scooping up the film with PAPER TOWNS star Nat Wolff attached and plan to go into production in June.

Following original works with the very well-received THE GUEST and YOU'RE NEXT, filmmaker Adam Wingard has turned to something more familiar with this week's release of BLAIR WITCH. Wingard's next project looks even more intriguing though, a Netflix film adaptation of the famed manga DEATH NOTE. The project, which had a rocky development stage throughout much of the past decade, seems to be in smoother waters at this point with a release sometime next year being targeted.

Participating in an AMA on Reddit this week, a fan asked Wingard about anime adaptations in Hollywood where previous ones went wrong and how they could be done better. Wingard says that his DEATH NOTE plans to do for anime what Chris Nolan's Batman films did for comics specifically grounding them in a very real world:

"I think anime is due for the same treatment that comics got when Nolan did Batman. I think the key is straying away from overt anime style like SPEED RACER and DRAGON BALL and instead try to ground the stories in more relatable ways. With DEATH NOTE I tried to give it a gritty lived in look. With that said DEATH NOTE is going to be my most insane movie yet. It makes THE GUEST look conventional."

DEATH NOTE centers on high school student who comes across a supernatural notebook. If the owner inscribes someone's name into it while picturing their face, that person will die. Intoxicated with his new powers, the young man begins to kill those he deems unworthy of life.

What if you had the power to decide who lives and who dies? We suggest you obey the rules. Based on the famous Japanese manga written by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, Death Note follows a high school student who comes across a supernatural notebook, realizing it holds within it a great power; if the owner inscribes someone's name into it while picturing their face, he or she will die. Intoxicated with his new godlike abilities, the young man begins to kill those he deems unworthy of life.
