A few hours after official word came down about Disney acquiring Marvel came word today that Fox is gearing up its rumored reboot of the "Fantastic Four" film franchise says Variety.

Tim Story directed the two previous live-action films in 2005 and 2007, both of which suffered a lot of negative criticism but made around $300 million each at the worldwide box-office.

Scribe Akiva Goldsman ("A Beautiful Mind," "Batman and Robin") has been hired to oversee the reboot as producer while Michael Green (TV's "Heroes," the upcoming "Green Lantern") will pen the script.

Why is this happening? Rights retention is the best guess. Fox has a licensing agreement from Marvel and thus controls the "Fantastic Four" movie franchise in perpetuity - under the condition that it continues making the films.

That motivation is not unheard of, a similar situation took place with 2002's "Queen of the Damned" which was greenlit to ensure Warner Bros. retained the film rights to Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles book series.

Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, Michael Chiklis and Julian McMahon starred in the previous two films, though with deals just made it's unsure if they'll return. If the project is a reboot however it seems unlikely.

"Fantastic Four" star Chris Evans tells Superhero Hype isn't against the idea of the 'Four' reboot saying "I think it's great. I'm sure it'll be a great movie... If they can go make a good dark edgy 'Fantastic Four,' right on."

Asked if he would return to play Johnny Storm, he says it would depend on the director - "if 'Fantastic Four' got rebooted and Christopher Nolan was going to direct it and said do you want to play Johnny Storm again, I'd be in those blue f*cking tights."

Eesh. The F4 aren't supposed to be dark and edgy, and I hope this reboot isn't, either. They're not supposed to be a shitty vehicle for Jessica Alba's poor excuse for acting, as well. Hopefully this reboot is a third option...a good option. Chair

I'd be willing to watch a "soft reboot." A few casting changes (to hell with Jessica Alba), and the general idea that the first two movies happened, they just don't really matter to the story being told in the third one. Sort of like what happened when they changed the actor playing James Bond (pre-Daniel Craig).

I like the FF films, too. They ain't great but they are entertaining. And, yes Alba is a crappy actress, but i can't hate her. She's one of my fav babes. Bukkake

The reboot of the Fantastic 4 will be a "complete reboot" and be called "Fantastic Four Reborn".

FANTASTIC FOUR: The Thing will be 100% CG in the upcoming "Fantastic Four Reborn" reboot which won't begin production until work on "X-Men: First Class" is wrapped.

20th Century Fox's plan to reboot the "Fantastic Four" franchise continues to gain momentum ahead of its planned production sometime next year for release Summer 2012.

Rumours began last week that Adrien Brody and Amber Heard were being pursued to star as Mr. Fantastic and Sue Storm respectively.

Then on Satuday came online buzz (via Latino Review) that "True Blood" star Stephen Moyer is up for Doctor Doom who will be shown as the ruler of Latveria in the property.

The report also said Alice Eve is in contention for Sue Storm, while "90210" star Kevin Pennington would be up for playing Johnny Storm.

Then today Comic Book Movie reported that Fox is pursuing Joe Carnahan ("The A-Team," "Smokiní Aces"), David Yates ("Harry Potter 5-7," "State of Play: The Mini-Series") and James McTeigue ("Ninja Assassin," "V for Vendetta") as potential directing candidates with one of the trio to get an offer soon.

The site also claims Fox is interested in having Bruce Willis voice The Thing which will be a CG animated character for much of the film.

So far though, all of this is mere speculation with nothing even close to being locked in as yet.

I LOVE the idea of Bruce Willis voicing The Thing, and I like Adrien Brody in general, so I'd be willing to give him a chance as Mr. Fantastic. I'm completely unfamiliar with EVERYONE else mentioned in that report.

*shrug*

I liked the two F4 films. They were dumb fun. The film should have been set in the 1960s...
