Kaiju madness! That's what is in store for Guillermo del Toro when he tackles PACIFIC RIM. A detailed plot synopsis that speaks of giant monsters, a portal to another world that spits out these creatures and the mechanized suits that are created to battle these beasts.

n an recent interview with Guillermo del Toro about DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK, opening in theaters on August 26. He spilled some details on PACIFIC RIM. "Huge" is the word he used to describe the monsters featured in the film, which concerns a giant monster invasion and the mech suits mankind creates to battle the beasts. "This is my most un-modest film, this has everything. The scale is enormous and I'm just a big kid having fun." Del Toro will be returning to Toronto shortly after doing press for "Dark" to continue pre-production.

He also touched on last week's news item in which Mike Mignola told a reporter that del Toro likely won't return for another HELLBOY. The director told us that he WOULD like to do a third film, but his schedule is so nuts "by the time I get to it and by the time we got Ron [Perlman] back, he'll be a HellMAN and in a wheelchair," del Toro joked.

del Toro assured that he's still interested in doing FRANKENSTEIN, regardless of how many similar projects are in development. "My take is so unique, it will set it apart," he said. Universal still has interest in getting the film off the ground.

Ron Perlman has joined the cast of frequent fellow collaborator Guillermo del Toro's action tentpole PACIFIC RIM at Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures reports Wired. del Toro calls the film a "very, very beautiful poem to giant monsters. Giant monsters versus giant robots. Twenty-five-story-high robots beating the crap out of 25-story-high monsters. We're trying to create a world in which the characters are real and how it would affect our world politically, how it would affect the landscape if creatures like this really came out of the sea, etc." Idris Elba, Charlie Day and Charlie Hunnam also star in the project which began filming on Monday.

Two of the busiest guys in town, Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, did a bit of script work on Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim. The duo landed on the genre scene with Feast and went on to script multiple Saw sequels and the upcoming Piranha 3DD, among other projects.

Pacific Rim is currently shooting up in Toronto with a cast that includes Sons of Anarchy's Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia's Charlie Day, Rinko Kikuchi, Max Martini, Rob Kazinsky, Clifton Collins Jr. and Diego Klattenhoff. Originally scripted by Travis Beacham, the story is an epic humans-versus-giant-monsters tale.

Inside, Melton and Dunstan - who were brought in for rewrites - tease you with what's to come.

In an interview with FEARnet, Melton said:

"It is going to kick major ass. It's giant monsters versus giant robots, and Guillermo del Toro is the only person who could bring it to you. That was an amazing experience, because we read the script, and so we went in knowing what the producers and studio wanted us to do; and we went in and met Guillermo, and he started showing us the tests by ILM. They were just mind-blowing. I think they'll probably show something at Comic-Con 2012. Because they should be done by then, or close to done by then. I'm telling you, it's gonna rule Hall H when Guillermo, the king of geeks, comes out and shows some of the stuff he's shot. People are gonna be blow away."

He went on to add:

"This is a PG movie. Most of his stuff is pretty edgy, for the most part. Nothing below PG-13 that I can think of. So this is his sort of four-quadrant movie. But it's got all the traits of a Guillermo movie, with the monsters and the younger characters and the things that go bump in the night… It's pretty great."

Pacific Rim is due in theaters July 12, 2013.

Guillermo del Toro's PACIFIC RIM synopsis: From the acclaimed filmmaker comes Warner Bros. Pictures' and Legendary Pictures' epic film. When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)-who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind's last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Warner Bros. Pictures have gotten their way and so Guillermo del Toro's upcoming robots vs. monsters epic "Pacific Rim" is undergoing post-conversion into 3D says Variety.

In July, del Toro revealed he was resistant to converting the film because of the scale of the pic's various skyscraper (or larger) sized creatures. The film is still expected to be offered in 2D as well.

3D ticket sales in international markets are booming and likely to be the major reason for the push.
