When writing about the forward movement on Marvel's big screen adaptation of Doctor Strange we commented that things were going to get weird with the Marvel slate of feature films soon. With the slate of available big marquee titles dwindling the film division is having to dig deeper into the catalog for some of their lesser known titles and the Cosmic side of the Marvel Universe will soon be present on the big screen in a big way.

Marvel's Kevin Feige is a big fan of this aspect of the company's library and was a big proponent of moving forward with Doctor Strange. So what comes next on that front? How about a big screen version of Guardians Of The Galaxy?

Originally created in 1969 and resurrected in 2008, Guardians of the Galaxy that begins as a far-future story revolving around a group of alien beings - each the last of their kind - who eventually travel back in time to protect the earth from alien invasion. Feige first raised the possibility of a Guardians Of The Galaxy feature in an interview with MTV in June of 2010 but it appears they have now decided to move ahead with the project as sources tell Twitch the film version is now in active development. Expect the on-screen Marvel universe to get a bit bigger soon.

More evidence seems to be mounting that Marvel Studios is moving forward with its proposed "Guardians of the Galaxy" movie.

Bleeding Cool reports that Marvel has filed for eleven trademarks under the title, applying the name to a variety of international classes including "jewelery, beverages, furniture, cosmetics, computer games, fabrics, foods, paper goods, entertainment, internet services and even retail store services."

The original story centres on a group of aliens, the last surviving members of their kind, who journey to Earth to protect the planet from an upcoming invasion.

No screenwriter or director is attached to the project as yet.

For those of you who have been anxiously waiting to find out what the secret Marvel movie is for 2014, we finally have the answer for you thanks to our friends at Latino Review, and it's not disappointing at all.

Marvel is developing Guardians of the Galaxy! This was one of those Marvel properties that was definitely in the running, and it's not really surprising that it ended up being one of the films. Just a few days ago we learned that Marvel filed eleven new trademark applications for the film property, so we knew it was coming. Then before that, Marvel president Kevin Feige talked about the adaptation confirming that the movie would portray the modern incarnation of the team, which includes such intergalactic superheroes as Star-Lord, Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, Groot and Rocket Raccoon.

This even helps explain the end credits scene in The Avengers with Thanos a little better, because Thanos will be in Guardians of the Galaxy! That's right, they teased this new movie at the end of The Avengers. It was also revealed that it will help lead up to The Avengers 2 in 2015! Marvel will officially announce the movie at Comic-Con 2012.

Here's a break down of what has been revealed so far...

One: The end credits scene at the end of The Avengers was both a teaser for Avengers 2 AND Guardians of the Galaxy.

Two: The Guardians being added to the Unified Universe means the theorhetical chronological order of Marvel Unified Movie Universe Phase 2 is: Iron Man 3, Thor 2, Captain America 2, Guardians of the Galaxy. Hulk gets the shaft.

Three: If I were to point you in the direction of a comic to read to theorize what Guardians of the Galaxy would be about, I’d suggest you go buy The Thanos Imperative.

Four: Nova. Expect Nova. There’s got to be a reason that Nova keeps showing up in stuff like Disney’s Ultimate Spider-Man and Marvel’s AvX. He’s not a Guardian per se, but he’s the most recognizable Marvel space character to the all-important “we’re young and buy toys” demographic.

With Joss Whedon in Toronto talking up his low-budget indie "Much Ado About Nothing" side project, MTV got a chance to ask him about "Slither" and "The Specials" filmmaker James Gunn coming onboard Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" feature.

Whedon says Gunn has barely even started on the script, but his hiring is what made him think the project could come together, something he wasn't sure of beforehand.

"James is what makes me think it will work. I myself was sort of like, ‘Well, I liked Rocket Raccoon as a kid, but I’m not sure how that plays [to a wider audience].’ He [Gunn] is so off the wall, and so crazy, but so smart, such a craftsman and he builds from heart.

He’s got a very twisted take on it, but it all comes from a real love for the material. It’s going to be hard for the humans to keep up… I know he’s going to come from left field and I’m going to go, ‘What?’ And then, ‘Of course, why didn’t I think of that?’ And then I’m going to beat him!"

We’re several screenplay drafts into The Guardians of the Galaxy now, with director James Gunn keeping busy on the latest. It’s not clear at all just how much the film has been changing, wave by wave, but it’s possible that things have wriggled about quite a lot, and they won’t necessarily have settled down just yet, either

All of which puts this next little tidbit on uneven ground, I’d say. It might be on the nose, or it could just be a snapshot of an ever-changing picture. Still, it’s interesting to note at least one phase of development on the movie.

According to Latino Review, who are on top form with Marvel bits and pieces tonight, the current focus in Guardians pre-production is on the characters of Star-Lord, Gamora and Drax The Destroyer. They seem to be implying, if only lightly, that this means Rocket Raccoon and Groot will have less up-front roles in the film.

Gamora and Drax getting the highlight treatment over Rocket Raccoon and Groot makes sense since the traditional backstories for both of those characters tie them to Guardians and Avengers 2 villain Thanos… also, Rocket Racoon and Groot are not humanoid characters, so – yeah – it’ll probably be easy not to focus on them.

Marvel have reportedly made deals with five actors for them to come in and test for the role of Peter Quill, Guardians of the Galaxy’s Starlord. He’s the human and, therefore unsurprisingly, the lead character.

According to Deadline the five actors are Joel Edgerton, Jack Huston, Jim Sturgess, Lee Pace and Eddie Redmayne.

But the list of contenders doesn’t stop there – Garrett Hedlund, James Marsden and Sullivan Stapleton are all also said to be somewhere on Marvel’s hit list.

Lee Pace has confirmed that he will be auditioning on Monday for the role of Star-Lord in the "Guardians of the Galaxy" feature.

"I'm very excited about it. The script is great...I have been [reading up on Star-Lord]. You want to know what you're doing. The character is a lot of fun. I hope it works out."

We've been seeing a lot of news recently for actors up for the role of Peter Quill a.k.a. Star-Lord in James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy, but there are other characters in the film that need to be cast. One of those characters is Drax the Destroyer.

CBM claims to have a source close to the production who says that Brian Patrick Wade (The Guardian), former WWE Superstar Dave Bautista (Man With The Iron Fists), and Old Spice guy Isaiah Mustafa are currently up for the part.

Casting rumors for Marvel Studios' "Guardians of the Galaxy" just got even stranger.

Latino Review reports that the company is looking into the availability of actors Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler for roles in the project, quite possibly the same role.

Also a few more names have been added to the list of casting potentials for the Peter Quill/Star-Lord character - Wes Bentley, Chris Lowell and Cam Gigandet.

James Gunn helms the project which will shoot this summer in London.
