MTV is developing a TV series based on the SCREAM film franchise, reports TV Line. The site says that former MTV executives Tony DiSanto and Liz Gateley are looking for a writer to pen the pilot, but says that it is unclear if Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson are involved at all. The four SCREAM films have earned over $600 million worldwide on small budgets, though SCREAM 4 to earn $38 million domestically and $58.9 million overseas last year.

What was first rumoured years ago is now about to happen. Kevin Williamson, the creator of SCREAM, is conspicuously not named in MTV's press release regarding their planned spin-off series. They say that their: "one-hour pilot will reinvent the successful horror comedy franchise that spawned three sequels and unleashed "Ghostface" to a legion of unsuspecting fans."

MTV and Dimension Films are in discussions with various writers for the potential series which would be slated for a summer 2014 debut on the network. Dimension Films is in discussions with the films' original director and renowned filmmaker Wes Craven to direct the one-hour pilot.

Wes Craven talks SCREAM TV series: Wes Craven took to Twitter to address the Scream television series in the works at MTV. Last week, when the news broke, it was revealed Craven was in talks to helm the pilot. "A lot of you have asked about the Scream TV series," he said via Twitter. "It's true I've been approached. My response was, it would depend on the script. If they have a great script/concept, it could be fun. f not, not."

MTV revealed today that Jay Beattie and Dan Dworkin will pen the SCREAM television series that has been buzzed about for a little bit now. Their credits include REVENGE, THE EVENT and CRIMINAL MINDS. Their take on the property is unknown and no other details were released. The pilot was given the green light back in April. Tony DiSanto and Liz Gateley are still shepherding the project. Wes Craven is in talks to direct.

Wes Craven will be involved with the series and will, in fact, be directing the pilot episode. Jill E. Blotevogel penned the pilot in which a viral Youtube video triggers a murder that brings a town's troubled past to the surface.

The cast has officially been announced for MTV's upcoming pilot for a TV series version of the horror/comedy franchise created by Kevin Williamson and Wes Craven. Willa Fitzgerald (ROYAL PAINS) will lead the cast as the shy, smart and beautiful Emma Duvall. Joining her is Amy Forsyth (REIGN) as Audrey Jensen, a Lutheran pastor's daughter and wannabe filmmaker; and John Karna (THE NEIGHBORS) as Noah Foster, a creative computer genius and pop culture aficionado.

There's also Carlson Young (THE KROLL SHOW) as Brooke Maddox, a popular and charismatic leader type whose sometimes sweet and sometimes has ferocious sex appeal; and there's newcomer Amadeus Serafini as Kieran Wilcox, the mysterious new kid in town with a dark side and a tough exterior. Jamie Travis (FOR A GOOD TIME, CALL…) directs the pilot which was penned by Jay Beattie and Dan Dworkin (CRIMINAL MINDS). Jill Blotevogel (HARPER'S ISLAND) will serve as showrunner for the series which is MTV's only drama pilot currently in the works.

MTV just recast one of its main characters. The Hollywood Reporter says Bex Taylor-Klaus is taking over for Amy Forsyth as "Audrey," a teen who aspires to be a filmmaker. No reason was revealed as to why Forsyth exited the role. Added to the cast, per THR; Bobby Campo (THE FINAL DESTINATION) will recur as Seth Branson, the hot English teacher at Lakewood High who has an easy charm and is clearly one of the "cool" teachers, who can go with it if a lesson plan gets a little off-track. Connor Weil (SHARKNADO) will be a series regular and portray Will Belmont, an all-American high school basketball player who adores his girlfriend, Emma (Fitzgerald).

Joel Gretsch (THE 4400) is set as Sheriff Clark Hudson, a good guy and good sheriff who is father to Kieran (Amadeus Serafini). David Arquette famously portrayed the lovable sheriff in Williamson's features. Taylor-Klaus, Campo, Weil and Gretsch will join previously-announced cast members Willa Fitzgerald (the lead), John Karna, Carlson Young and Amadeus Serafini. Jamie Travis will direct the pilot which was penned by Jay Beattie and Dan Dworkin. Jill Blotevogel will serve as showrunner for the series. Wes Craven, Marianne Maddalena and Cathy Konrad are executive producers.

No Ghostface for SCREAM TV series: Fan site Ghostface.co.uk fired off an email to R.J. Torbert of Fun World (the company that makes the masks in stores everywhere) to inquire about Ghost Face's possible appearance in the series. Here's how he responded (unedited with "registered" symbol and all):

"To answer your question regarding the SCREAM T.V. SERIES. Please note, that I had been in communication with TWC regarding this and they have informed me, that as of now, and during the initial launch that GHOST FACEŽ is not involved in the new format. They also indicated that because of this direction, it does not mean, that Ghost FaceŽ will not be involved at a later date. So, there is still a question , to the question. However, as of now, there is no involvement. I'm telling you now, as we get closer to Halloween, because of the many inquiries, we have had from our RETAILERS, as well as the FANS from all over the world. In addition, - we have received pretty harsh notes, some addressed specifically to me, implying that Fun World and/or me, is responsible for the SERIES not having GHOST FACEŽ - nothing could be further from the truth. We believe , SCREAM is GHOST FACE, and GHOST FACEŽ is Scream. However, while GHOST FACEŽ is owned by Fun World, The Scream Motion Picture Franchise is owned by The Weinstein Company and it is their option to Film a movie or T.V. SHOW without GHOST FACEŽ. Regardless, we wish them the best of luck and I'm sure SCREAM FANS will check out the series. Who knows what will happen in the future regarding the series and Ghost FaceŽ. Never say Never."

Jamie Travis is directing from a script penned by Jay Beattie and Dan Dworkin. Jill Blotevogel will serve as showrunner for the series. Wes Craven, Marianne Maddalena and Cathy Konrad are executive producers. Bex Taylor-Klaus, Bobby Campo, Connor Weil and Joel Gretsch star.

Last month we got the news that the iconic Ghost Face visage that permeated four feature films would not be in the upcoming TV series. Here's a report at Entertainment Weekly;

No, the series will not being using the Ghost Face mask for now. In an effort to create a "wholly unique experience" the show's creators are giving us a mask that's another spin on the classic Edvard Munch painting. Words like "organic" and "made of flesh" are bandied about in the report, but as MTV's senior vice president and head of scripted development Mina Lefevre says: "It's a darker, almost more grounded, evolved version of the mask. It's something we're constantly talking about. How did that mask become that mask? What's its purpose? How did it evolve? If the SCREAM movie mask was the more plastic version, for a lack of a better description, this one is a more organic looking and frankly darker version."

She later told the outlet that the feel of the SCREAM film series is very much present in the television show, which debuts October 2015. Here's the show's description; "The high school-set series will follow a slew of not-yet-slain students: shy popular girl Emma (Willa Fitzgerald), artsy loner Audrey (Bex Taylor-Klaus), computer geek Noah (John Karna), all-American athlete Will (Connor Weil), ferocious socialite Brooke (Carlson Young), and mysterious new kid Kieran (Amadeus Serafini). The show also stars Joel Gretsch as Sheriff Clark Hudson (Kieran's father) and Tracy Middendorf as Maggie."

MTV has announced a June 30th premiere date. The upcoming TV series is described as a "high school-set series that will follow a slew of not-yet-slain students: shy popular girl Emma (Willa Fitzgerald), artsy loner Audrey (Bex Taylor-Klaus), computer geek Noah (John Karna), all-American athlete Will (Connor Weil), ferocious socialite Brooke (Carlson Young), and mysterious new kid Kieran (Amadeus Serafini). The show also stars Joel Gretsch as Sheriff Clark Hudson (Kieran's father) and Tracy Middendorf as Maggie." In the pilot, "a YouTube video goes viral, which will have adverse repercussions for teenager Audrey and seemingly serve as the catalyst for a murder that opens up a window to [her] town's troubled past."

MTV's head of scripted development Mina Lefevre told EW, "It's a darker, almost more grounded, evolved version of the mask. It's something we're constantly talking about. How did that mask become that mask? What's its purpose? How did it evolve? If the Scream movie mask was the more plastic version, for a lack of a better description, this one is a more organic looking and frankly darker version."
