George Tatum, a deranged mental patient who keeps suffering from a recurring nightmare, has been deemed sane and released from a mental hospital, but his nightmares start again and he returns back to his hometown where he stalks a family, as well as killing people. This really sleazy and gory movie from the early 80's is as grimy as William Lustig's Maniac, including having part of it filmed in New York City. The only problem with it is that its slow in parts, and the family who George is stalking are annoying, especially the mother and the oldest child who is such a smarmy little shithead.

I wanted to get this when Code Red released it on DVD. Then I kinda forgot about it, and now it's out of print and expensive as hell. Cry

"You believed in this man, you rehabilitated him and put him back out on the streets. But now, he's out there killing people, and we can't have that."

LOL! Definitely my favorite line from the film. Some of the best gore scenes from the 80s are in this one. Overall sleazy feel to it as well. One of my favorites. I still have 2 or 3 different VHS releases as well as the Code Red release. Belongs in every horror fan's collection.

/\ yeah, you definitely need to see it. There is definitely unintentional humor and awful late 70s / early 80s styles and dialog in addition to some great gore set pieces. I was lucky enough to see this one in the theater on a double bill with PIECES some years ago. Lots of fun!

That double bill sounds amazing. I already love PIECES. I still need to see NIGHTMARE.

i bought NIGHTMARE when first released by Code Red
my only criticism was the directors interview in Italian with no Eng subs
surely after all the work they put into the film Code Red could of had subs!

i think they re released the dvd with subs now....

NIGHTMARE is a good slasher and a film i wanted to see for years after being banned and still cut in the UK (though after many other films like this surely an uncut film could be released now)

the version to watch is the disc which is like a dvd-r making it like a copy....

and of course the controversy surrounding Tom Savini who has disowned the film despite being a sfx consultant in credits and a publicity photograph of him helping out

still got a DVD-R of NIGHTMARE
then bought the Code Red dvd but the director speaks in Italian with no Englisg subs
- its been released here in the UK on blu ray and dvd for a long time now uncut

there are still some scenes which are in some dvds/blu rays and missing in others
so I might buy the UK blu ray

considering all the crap controversy surrounding the film on video back in the 80's
and the guy David Hamilton Grant who released a longer version of the BBFC print on VHS was jailed for this
then some years later was killed in Greece.....
