Writer Jon Spaihts (the original PROMETHEUS draft) is producing alongside Roy Lee, while up-and-coming filmmaker Saman Kesh will direct. THR reports the reimagining will "use the original setup of seven strangers trapped in a giant cube-like structure. The remake, titled CUBED, is described as a sci-fi survival thriller about artificial intelligence, humanity and the birth of a new 'digital' race. Philip Gawthorne is writing the script. The original CUBE hit in 1998 and eventually spawned two follow-ups, CUBE 2 HYPERCUBE and CUBE ZERO.

Big fan of the first one.
Sequel wasn't good.
Never saw the prequel.

Vincenzo Natali's 1997 indie sci-fi/horror feature CUBE" was a break out hit, an inventive thriller which used a re-dressed one-room set, a handful of actors and some clever visual effects to create a fresh genre film that relied on smarts more than formula. Natali never quite achieved follow-up success on film with the likes of CYPHER and SPLICE, but has since gone on to great success on TV. As for CUBE there came two lackluster direct-to-video follow-ups, and the franchise seemed to have died until last year when word came that a remake of the original was on its way.

At last report Jon Spaihts (PROMETHEUS) and Saman Kesh were working on the script for the film which was to be called CUBED. This week though, Spaihts told the Arrow in the Head web site that the whole project is on hold: "I have been involved with it. I think it's resting right now as we look for a new creative direction, but we still are inspired by the vision of that original, independent, high-concept film. With any luck, we'll still bring a new iteration of that story to light."

Spaihts added that he did not know if Kesh was still attached to direct the movie. No word on when of even if the project might go forward again.

Recently revisited the original. Loved it. IF done properly a remake could be great!
