Author Staci Layne Wilson has written this book, ANIMAL MOVIES GUIDE, which centers on all types of animal movies, from Disney oriented family films to straight out horror films like CUJO and CAT PEOPLE. She has excised films like JAWS and ANACONDA, sticking to the furry kind of animals. In her intro, she states that perhaps in a future book reptile, birds, and such will be covered.
For now she has done an admirable job. The book is well written and fun. Horror fans will be pleased that she, herself, is a fan of the genre. And it shows. Her reviews are always entertaining to read. I may not agree with all she says, like her dislike of CUJO, for example, but she manages to show her enjoyment for even the shlockiest films, like the usually dissed on SHEENA (that stars the gorgeous Tanya Roberts). Statements like these prove that she is down to earth and not some boring film snob.
The book also features some really good facts about the animals in the films, as well as some great interviews, including Don Coscareilli and Elli Roth. Check out the interview with Bai Ling on THE BREED, for uhm, a very interesting quote from her.
This is a great book for fans of animal films, and like I said genre fans should definitely check it out, as well. Besides, how many animal movie books are out there that mention BENJI, THAT DARN CAT!, WILD BEASTS, and THE BEYOND (the later two in movie synapses/ mini-capsule reviews) in it?
